Manatee Photography Statement by Greg Geffner

Some people wish, they wish, they wish they were a fish, but me, I wish I was a manatee! You may remember reading about my mom in the news a long time ago. She was so obsessed about me and my brother taking time away from being attentive to my father, that one day she snapped and strapped me and my brother into the family car, child seats and drove down to the local inlet in Florida. It was extremely isolated with no one around. After securely tying us in, she put the car into gear, jumped out the door and let it take off, splashing into the water and floating out into the middle of the river, where it slowly filled up with water and sank below the surface. Struggling frantically, I eventually un-knotted and freed myself from the straps, rolled down the window and swam out leaving my little brother behind. Upon up to the surface, I saw that my mother was gone, with no one around except for a pod of manatees that swam over to make sure that I was safe and for the next couple of months took care of me until one day the authorities discovered where I was and removed me from my transphibian life with the manatees. I still have fond memories of playing with my adopted manatee brother Alganon, who got his name from floating around all day on his back, letting algae grow on his tummy.
